Tips for Generating Podcast Content

podcast contentReady to up your content game? Feeling like your standard social media and blogging efforts just aren’t bringing in the traffic you’d like to see? Maybe it’s time to think about a podcast. A downloadable broadcast of you or someone from your company discussing industry news, product updates and other interesting information that your target customer would find valuable. Now, before you write podcasts off as a huge effort and time investment, keep reading to see how easy it is to generate podcast content, and what it takes to record it and make it available.

Podcasts are like an audible blog – which is great because chances are a significant portion of your target audience is too busy to sit down and read every blog post you publish. Podcasts can be listened to anywhere – the car, the office, the gym, at home – while the reader is doing other things like driving, filing, working out, making dinner, etc. Keep this in mind when you’re working on brainstorming content for your podcast.

Remember that the most important thing when recording a podcast or coming up with content is to completely enjoy whatever you’re talking about. A high level of enthusiasm and passion for the subject matter is what captures your audience and keeps them downloading and listening.

But recording a podcast isn’t just sitting in front of a microphone and saying whatever comes to mind. Have a plan in place for what you’d like to talk about, try not to ramble and keep your podcast around a half hour. Here are some more tips to help you get your podcast off the ground:

  • Be authentic. Podcasting is one of the best ways to show your audience the personality behind your business, which helps people connect with your brand. Instead of reading a static post, they’re hearing someone speak to them dynamically. So if you’re genuinely excited about the latest industry news, go ahead and be excited in your podcast!
  • Mix it up. Don’t just lock in to one kind of podcast. Keep things interesting for your listener – include debates, interviews with people in your company or guests, top 10 lists, giveaways, etc.
  • Use the right equipment. You don’t need to buy expensive gear to record a podcast. Basically, the essentials boil down to a microphone for every person who’s talking and some sort of recording software on your computer. In the end, content will determine the success of your podcast, not how high-tech your set up is.
  • Find a dynamic speaker. The human voice is a very natural way to share and disperse information, so it’s extremely important to find a dynamic speaker to host the podcast – someone with a good, clear, sharp voice. Nobody wants to listen to a boring person with a dull and monotonous voice. Find someone who can connect to the audience and keep them engaged.
  • Ask your listeners what they like. Crowdsourcing your audience (especially through social media) for content ideas is always a good idea. After all, they’re the ones listening and delivering what they want will keep them listening.
  • Come up with a good name. Like a good subject line or headline, a catchy name for your podcast will increase its usability and visibility. So, don’t just use your company name – think of something that makes sense for your industry and business, as well as the common content you’ll share.
  • Be searchable. What good is creating content if no one can find it? In addition to a descriptive and catchy name, post each podcast episode with a title and tags that include keywords. Also write a short summary so people know what they’re getting before they download.
