Is It Time for Your Business to Give Instagram a Try?

by Mandy Heid

Facebook has always been one of the top social media networks, but now its little sister is getting some time to shine. Instagram is showing three times more engagement than Facebook despite having fewer users, which is good news for businesses that have started using the social media outlet.

The study conducted, looked into hundreds of millions of Facebook and Instagram posts to judge the engagement each received. Although there are twice as many users on Facebook than Instagram, brands seem to be getting quite a bit more engagement from a number of users on Instagram. This is not to say we should take money away from Facebook, but to shift a bit of the money to give Instagram a little love.

We live in a visual age. Instagram gives brands a more visual way of reaching their customers. With the photo sharing that goes on through Instagram, they can highlight their best products and link right back to their shopping page. Another visual option on Instagram is showing a video ad to represent your business and tell its story. This gives you the power of sight, motion, and sound as opposed to just sight. Instagram videos can be up to 60 seconds long. Other options on Instagram for business ads are carousel ads and stories ads. The type of business will determine what ad is right for you.

Not only can you use ads on Instagram for your business, but businesses also do well with organic posts. Here are some of the best ways to use Instagram for your business:

  1. Show off your business in a creative way: Focus on what sets your business apart and the products you sell. Use this visual outlet to tell your story with either pictures or video. Not only share your business but share some tips and tricks related to your business with your followers.
  2. Create a captivating profile: Create a profile that stands out and shows what you are all about. Keep in mind, the only clickable link is in the bio section of your profile, so be sure to update that frequently depending on what you want to portray at that time.
  3. Use hashtags to expand your reach: Hashtags are a great way to get your message out there to a larger audience. First thing, set up your main hashtag for your company (#yourbrandname) and use it sparingly on Instagram. Some other popular hashtags to use are #TBT, #instagood, or something industry specific. It’s recommended to use between five and ten hashtags, even though the max is 30. Too many hashtags tend to look like spam to some users.
